By adapting Taito's "Space Invaders" for the Atari VCS console, Atari was able to increase the sales of its VCS console significantly - the console became a bestseller. Space Invaders was for a while the best-selling game for the Atari VCS with about two million copies sold and was only overtaken by Pac-Man, Pitfall!, Asteroids and Missile Command. There are three different PAL versions. The first version runs slower than the NTSC original. In the second version the speed problem does not exist anymore, but there is a new bug: in the two-player games (no. 81-96) the shots change between the players, but the movement of the shooting stations does not, it can only be controlled by the right player. Also the colours are darker. The third version runs without errors. In the SECAM version, the first and the last digit of the score display of both players are shown in different colours.
Interesting: If you hold the reset button pressed while switching on the console, the ship gets a double shot.
In 1980 the world's first big video game tournament took place in the USA. Over 10,000 players took part in the Atari 2600 Space Invaders Championship. We could also call this championship the start of today's widespread eSports. Rebecca (Bill) Heinemann (later programmer of Avalon Hill's "London Blitz" and "Out of Control" for the Atari VCS and other games for other systems) won this first tournament, the final of which was held in New York. First prize was an arcade machine. |
